The Power to Care program eases high cost of summer electric bills for many Arkansans

With summer temperatures reaching triple digits, many Arkansans have trouble paying their electric bills. Entergy Arkansas’ The Power to Care program, administered by Southern Good Faith Fund, provides financial assistance to eligible Entergy customers who are elderly or disabled and meet income guidelines. Rosalie Tripp, SGFF’s Program Coordinator for The Power to Care, was interviewed as part of this news story that explained how the program helps many Arkansans who otherwise might have to choose between paying their electric bill and buying food or medicine.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel orders payday lenders to cease making loans and forgive existing loan debt

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel on March 18, 2008, held a news conference to announce that he was ordering payday lenders in Arkansas to cease making loans and to forgive existing loan debt. Michael Rowett, Research and Communications Manager for Southern Good Faith Fund’s Public Policy program, serves as Chairman of Arkansans Against Abusive Payday Lending and was interviewed for this news story.

SGFF provides hundreds of Arkansans with free tax preparation

Southern Good Faith Fund and its parent company, Southern Bancorp Inc., provide free tax preparation to hundreds of Arkansans each year as part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) program. Southern Good Faith Fund President Angela Duran discussed how the VITA program increases participants’ assets in an interview following a March 11, 2008, news conference highlighting Southern’s VITA services.

Educational Success in Helena-West Helena

What happens when parents, students and teachers all commit to a student’s success? If the KIPP Delta College Preparatory School in Helena-West Helena is any indication, that combination can be powerful and productive.

The KIPP charter schools began in 1994 in Houston when two young teachers, frustrated with the public school system, decided to do something about it.

High Heat Means High Demand for Utility Assistance

After a mild start to summer, the high heat has arrived in August with a vengeance. And high temperatures in August mean high electricity bills in September.

The Southern Good Faith Fund in Pine Bluff helps low income families finance homes, college educations and start businesses. But this time of year, it is utility assistance that is most in demand.
