The Boys & Girls Club of Phillips county announced today that over the past six months they have successfully solicited nearly $300,000 in challenge grants from a combination of threes local and national foundations, including the Helena Health Foundation (HHF).

DBP generating community involvement

Turning the community of Helena-West Helena around is a “multi-stepped” process. According to Ben Steinberg, the president of Bancorp South and head of the Delta Bridge Project, there are many steps that must be taken to ensure job growth will succeed and, in turn, revitalization of the town also succeeds.

Delta Bridge Project announces grant to fund oilseed processing facility feasibility study

Shawn Payne, Delta Bridge Project Steering Committee member and Jack Hornor, Economic Development Goal Team chairman announced $41,500 in grant funding to the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce to conduct a feasibility study for an oilseed processing facility. The facility would be built adjacent to the bio-diesel facility that is currently being constructed in Phillips County.

Delta Bridge Project Announces $400,000 in Grant Funding

The Delta Bridge Project announced today $400,000 in grants for KIPP Delta College Preparatory School in Helena-West Helena. These funds will provide space to accommodate classes for the next two years while KIPP Delta expands its program to serve students in grades 5 through 12.

$670,000 donated for Delta

While politicians talked Friday about needing an integrated approach to address health care, education and economic development in the Arkansas Delta, Southern Bancorp announced $670,000 in grant funding to help projects that would address some of those needs in one Delta community - Phillips County.

The announcement and discussion came during the annual conference Friday of the Mississippi Delta Grassroots Caucus at the Clinton library in downtown Little Rock.

Helena-West Helena’s $1-a-ride bus service will have 66 stops

In new Helena-West Helena, life seems a little better

Even among the dilapidated houses and ghostly storefronts in Helena-West Helena, it’s easy to believe the young Michael Boone when he says his beaten-down hometown will shake off its blues.

“I had a good life here when I was coming up,” says Boone, who went off to play football and basketball at the University of Mississippi and earned a degree in banking and finance.
