‘Business After Hours’ Making a Comeback in Arkadelphia

The Arkadelphia Area Chamber of Commerce, Clark County Industrial Council and Small Business Development Center at Henderson State University are teaming up to bring back “Business After Hours.”

The event will allow residents of the area to visit various area businesses and visit with each other,” said Lonnie Jackson of HSU and Paul Shuffield of Southern Bancorp.

Baldwin provides glimpse into final CCSP document

Although the Clark County Strategic Plan is not yet complete, the 42-page document lists 39 goals and 160 action steps to reach those goals, said Phil Baldwin, CEO of Southern Bancorp, which helped provide financing for the project.

The plan, which will sum up a year’s worth of work by citizens of Clark County, combines the work of all seven of the project’s subcommittees, Baldwin said.

Southern Financial Partners contributes $10K to SBDC effort

Southern Financial Partners, a nonprofit affiliate of Southern Bancorp, recently contributed $10,000 to Henderson State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to provide FastTrac Training to entrepreneurs in 2007. This is the second contribution received as part of a three-year commitment.

City receives $25,000 grant for cleaning up

A $25,000 grant presented to the City of Gurdon on Friday, March 2, will allow city officials to begin cleaning up abandoned and run-down properties around town.

A check for the grant was presented to Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin by Phil Baldwin, president of Southern Bancorp, and Dr. Wesley Kluck, vice president for institutional advancement at Ouachita Baptist University and co-chair of the Clark County Strategic Planning initiative.

Arkansas Business names Baldwin one of most powerful people

Phil Baldwin of Arkadelphia was recently selected one of the 176 most powerful people in Arkansas by Arkansas Business magazine. Such accolades mean little to Baldwin, who said “we do what we can do.”

Baldwin is the president and CEO of Southern Bancorp, parent company to Elk Horn Bank of Arkadelphia and several other banks in Arkansas and Mississippi.

Old church at Caddo and Seventh included in cleanup plan

Nine out of 10 properties selected for demolition or improvement have been razed and the next phase of a city-wide cleanup plan is being implemented, Arkadelphia City Manager Jimmy Bolt said.

Last summer, Arkadelphia city directors approved a list of 10 properties to be improved, either by demolition or repair.

Baldwin: strategic plan a ‘blueprint for change’

In what was called the most important gathering thus far of the Clark County Strategic Plan, Phillip Baldwin, president and CEO of Southern Bancorp, talked about the need to “dream big” for Clark County’s future.

Southern Bancorp is one of the entitites spearheading the CCSP. Baldwin spoke Tuesday night to a packed auditorium in Ouachita’s Hickingbotham Business Hall about his company’s success in rebuilding Helena-West Helena in Phillips County.
